How Ryan Graves's claims fared when checked

Our assessment

The site's assessmentChecked 29 Sep 2026

A first-hand professional witness, not an intelligence source relaying others' claims. His Navy service and squadron assignment are well corroborated, and his account of the 2014-15 Virginia Beach sightings has been consistent across the original 2019 NYT story, 60 Minutes, and his 2023 congressional testimony, with other squadron pilots reportedly corroborating similar sightings. No source found disputes the basic facts of what he says he observed. His subsequent commercial ventures, especially Merged Point, create a financial interest in UAP being confirmed as extraordinary, which is a reasonable basis for weighing his advocacy (not his eyewitness account) with some caution.

Credentials

Verified credentials

  • deployments aboard USS Enterprise (2012, Operation Enduring Freedom) and USS Theodore Roosevelt (2015, Operation Inherent Resolve)
  • left the Navy in 2019
  • House Oversight Committee testimony under oath, July 26, 2023

Unverified or disputed credentials

  • exact total years and specific in/out service dates, media consistently cite ~10 years but no independent DoD service record was located

Beginning in 2014-2015, after radar/IR upgrades, VFA-11 ('Red Rippers') F/A-18 crews off Virginia Beach routinely detected unknown objects, correlated across radar, infrared, and eventually visual identification, described as dark-gray or black cubes inside a clear sphere roughly 5-15 feet in diameter; one such object passed within about 50 feet of an aircraft during a 2014 training mission.

the object described as a dark gray or a black Cube inside of a clear sphere came within 50 feet of the lead aircraft and was estimated to be 5 to 15 feet in diameter

  • Unverified43:36Unsourced

Since 2021, all UAP videos have been classified 'secret or above,' which Graves argues increases secrecy, speculation, and mistrust.

since 2021 all UAP videos are classified as secret or above this level of secrecy not only impedes our understanding but fuels speculation and mistrust

  • Unverified1:08:03Multi sensor

The same objects were observed holding a completely stationary position ('0.0 Mach', zero groundspeed) in Category-4-hurricane-force winds, then abruptly accelerating to supersonic speeds of Mach 1.1-1.2.

these objects were staying completely stationary and category 4 hurricane winds these same objects would then accelerate to supersonic speeds 1.1 1.2 Mach

  • Unverified1:20:16Secondhand

In roughly 2003, Boeing contractors near a Vandenberg AFB launch facility observed a roughly 100-yard, red/square object approach from the ocean and hover at low altitude for about 45 seconds before departing over nearby mountains; a similar event with aggressive behavior toward security guards occurred later that evening. The witness who relayed this to Graves reportedly retained official base documentation of the event.

observed a very large 100 yard sided uh Red Square uh approached the base from the ocean and hover at low altitude over one of the launch facilities

  • Unverified1:22:20Secondhand

Commercial pilots have received cease-and-desist orders from their employers for coming forward about UAP safety encounters.

I have been made privy to conversations with commercial aviators who have received seasoned assist orders

  • Unverified2:01:13Secondhand/single sensor

The released 'Gimbal' video shows a single rotating object on FLIR, while the pilots' verbal chatter refers to a broader 'fleet' of objects not visible on that sensor; Graves says he saw this discrepancy reflected in radar situational-awareness display data during a debrief of the aircrew involved.

the recording on the at FLIR system shows a single object that rotates ... you hear the pilots refer to a fleet of objects that is not visible on the FLIR system

  • Unverified2:03:13Unsourced

More than 30 military and commercial witnesses have confided similar UAP encounters through Americans for Safe Aerospace, with nearly 5,000 people having joined the organization; Graves personally estimates that only around 5% of pilot UAP sightings are ever reported.

we're somewhere near five percent reporting perhaps so like 95 basically don't report seeing UAP that's just my personal estimate

  • Unverified2:14:27Speculation

Graves, Grusch, and Fravor each answer, without elaboration in open session, that it is possible UAP could be collecting reconnaissance on and probing vulnerabilities in US military capabilities, and are 'potentially' an existential national-security threat.

do you feel based off of your experience ... that these UOP uaps provide an existential threat to the National Security of the United States Mr Graves potentially
