What was reported

According to Soviet documents journalist George Knapp says he obtained in the 1990s, and to Colonel Boris Sokolov, who led a Soviet defence-ministry UFO study, on 4 October 1982 officers at a missile base near Byelokorovichi watched unknown objects over several hours split apart, merge and change shape, while the launch-control panel briefly lit up as if valid codes had been entered, returning to normal when the objects left. Knapp repeated the account to a House Oversight task force on 9 September 2025. The underlying file has not been published or independently examined, so the account is secondhand.

In October 1982 at a Soviet ICBM base, UFOs performed maneuvers (splitting apart and re-fusing) over a four-hour period, and near the end of the incident the missile launch-control codes activated on their own, arming the missiles, which officers could not shut down until the UFOs departed.

the launch control codes for the ICBMs lit up. Something entered the correct codes. The missiles were fired up and ready to launch and they could not shut it down.
