What was reported

On 13 September 1957 the O Globo columnist Ibrahim Sued published an unsigned letter from a man who said he saw a disc explode over the sea near Ubatuba and enclosed metal fragments. Brazil's mineral-production laboratory, at Olavo Fontes's request, found very pure magnesium. The Condon project's neutron-activation analysis found the sample less pure than Dow Chemical's sublimed magnesium, with strontium apparently added in manufacture, a composition Dow had made experimentally by 1940, and concluded the few grams could easily be of earthly origin. The letter writer was never identified. Garry Nolan has since described his own laboratory's analysis of a fragment in a corpus talk (claim unverified).

Strongest ordinary reading

A material fragment traced to a 1957 Ubatuba, Brazil incident measured 99.999% pure silicon via atomic probe tomography, a purity level Nolan says was not achievable with 1950s technology; one of two independently sourced samples showed magnesium isotope ratios described as 'way off Earth normal.'

99.999% silicon 1950 something who makes silicon at that level of purity... one of the two chains of evidence had magnesium isotope ratios that are way off Earth normal
