What was reported

In the evening several independent witnesses, eleven in later counts, saw a reddish object with lights hover low over Big Lake Park and drop a bright glowing mass; police and firefighters arriving within minutes found molten metal flowing down a levee over an area about four by six feet. Offutt AFB and Eppley Airfield reported no aircraft missing. Contemporary analyses found it to be largely iron with small amounts of other elements, consistent with ordinary carbon steel. Garry Nolan, Jacques Vallee and colleagues re-analysed samples in a 2022 Progress in Aerospace Sciences paper and found the elemental mixture heterogeneous but the isotope ratios terrestrial. No source for the object or the metal was identified.

What officials concluded

No conclusion stated

No official explanation has been given.

Strongest ordinary reading

None established; the material is ordinary terrestrial iron and steel, consistent with a ground-level prank or industrial dump that was never traced

Claims and verdicts

Nolan published what he calls the first peer-reviewed academic analysis of a claimed UAP material, from the Council Bluffs, Iowa incident: mass spectrometry showed a heterogeneous (not homogenized) mixture of iron, titanium, aluminum and other elements, with no claim made about extraterrestrial origin.

I published literally the world's first peer-reviewed academic article on analysis of a UAP material... I found nothing extraterrestrial about it

  • Unverified1:56:37Garry NolanUnsourced

Nolan's lab analyses of the Ubatuba, Council Bluffs, and claimed-Roswell materials have reportedly been shared with or are held by several other people for potential independent verification, though no named independent replication is cited in this interview.

the material is in several people's hands... if anybody else can use this
