Unidentified lights in archival astronomy images were 68 percent more likely to be imaged within 24 hours after a nuclear weapons test.
unidentified lights in archival astronomy images were 68% more likely to be imaged 24 hours after a nuclear weapons test
Our check The figure is real: Bruehl and Villarroel (Scientific Reports, 20 October 2025; 2,718 days from 1949 to 1957) report transients 45 percent more likely within one day of a nuclear test, with the effect strongest the day after (about 68 percent), and they say the work does not establish causation or what the transients are. The paper does not claim craft appear after tests, as Rogan then says. Its meaning is contested: Watters et al. (2026) argue the association comes from the observing schedule and normalisation, and Villarroel and colleagues answer with a reanalysis restricted to 370 confirmed observation nights (84.2 vs 72.8 percent of nights with a transient, one-tailed p = 0.046).
