What was reported
During morning break, students and at least one teacher at Westall High School saw a silvery object descend behind trees into an open paddock, with some describing light aircraft circling it; students who ran over reported one to three flattened or burnt circles of grass. Contemporary press suggested a weather balloon. Researcher Keith Basterfield found records of a HIBAL radiation-monitoring balloon launched from Mildura that may have come down near the school, and Brian Dunning suggested an aircraft-towed target drogue for the later part. Systematic interviews began only in the 2000s, and early accounts already differed on the number and shape of objects.
