What was reported
Around 8:15 p.m., as Operário and Vasco da Gama began a Brazilian championship match before about 24,500 paying spectators, a bright light appeared above the stadium; accounts give one to four lights of changing colour. Referee José de Assis Aragão said a strong light hung still over the stadium for more than 30 minutes, and players were among the witnesses. The event launched the career of ufologist A. J. Gevaerd. No official investigation or instrument record is known, and no conventional identification has been published.
