What was reported
At about 10:45 p.m. on 4 November 1957 two Civil Aeronautics Administration controllers in the Kirtland tower watched a light descend at the end of a runway and, through binoculars, an egg-shaped object about 15 to 20 ft tall cross the field at low height, hover within 3,000 ft of the tower and then climb steeply into the overcast. Albuquerque radar approach control reported a target in the same area that later took up position behind a departing C-46. The sighting came during the November 1957 wave that included Levelland. The Air Force filed it as 'possible aircraft', noting the radar returns matched a small plane, and the Condon report agreed that a small private aircraft flying without a flight plan had probably tried to land at the wrong airport; some later writers dispute that it fits the reported hovering and climb.
