What was reported
A bright fireball was seen across six states and Ontario at about 4:44 p.m.; residents of Kecksburg reported something crashing in the woods, and state police and military personnel searched the area that night, finding nothing according to the press at the time. Later witnesses, notably volunteer firefighter James Romansky, described an acorn-shaped object with hieroglyph-like markings removed on a flatbed truck. A 1967 trajectory study from two photographs and a seismograph placed the fireball's end near the western end of Lake Erie, far from Kecksburg. NASA said in 2005 that fragments from the area had been identified as Soviet satellite debris but that the records were lost; proponents note that Kosmos 96 had re-entered hours earlier.
What officials concluded
Tentative explanation
Astronomers and DoD (1965): a meteor; NASA (2005): fragments from a Soviet satellite, records lost
Strongest ordinary reading
A bolide meteor seen across several states; the acorn-and-truck account rests on later testimony
