What was reported

A salesman hiking with two companions, one a teenager, photographed a shiny object about 25 ft across, which they said dropped a small item; one companion later went back into the snow-covered woods and emerged with a fragment, which J. Allen Hynek reported to be solder with embedded aluminium-magnesium particles. A Royal Canadian Air Force report suggested the object was real and about 40 to 50 in across. The Condon study (Case 57) examined the original photographs and circumstances, noted the principals' evasive behaviour and that the witness alerted the press rather than the police, and concluded the case had no probative value; only the sworn testimony made it look stronger than most.

What officials concluded

Unresolved

No evidence of probative value (Condon Case 57)

Strongest ordinary reading

Probable hoax or small object; the recovered fragment was ordinary solder
