What was reported

On the evening of 25 January 2010 residents of Harbour Mille saw and photographed a bright object with a trail rising from behind a hill, which some took for a missile launch. The RCMP first attributed it to a missile, then withdrew the statement; the Prime Minister's Office said there were no missiles, France confirmed no military activity on nearby Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, and NORAD knew of no launch. The RCMP closed it as an unexplained sighting. No conventional source was officially identified.

What officials concluded

Unresolved

Unexplained sighting (RCMP); not a missile (PMO, NORAD)

Strongest ordinary reading

None established; a sunlit aircraft contrail, a frequent 'rising missile' illusion, is the obvious candidate but was not confirmed
