What was reported

During a match between Fiorentina and Pistoiese on 27 October 1954, play stopped as players and a crowd of about 10,000 watched silvery objects, described as cigars, eggs or 'mandarin hats', drift over the stadium while fine white filaments ('angel hair') fell on the city. A student, Alfredo Jacopozzi, sent a sample to the University of Florence, where Professor Giovanni Canneri reported a fibrous material made mostly of boron, silicon, calcium and magnesium; the filaments disintegrated quickly and no sample survives. Hundreds of similar reports came from northern Italy and eastern France that month. The usual explanation is ballooning spider silk, but the reported composition does not fit silk, so the case remains disputed.

What officials concluded

No conclusion stated

No official explanation has been given.

Strongest ordinary reading

Ballooning spider silk is the usual explanation; the reported boron-silicon analysis does not fit it and cannot be rechecked
