What was reported
Anglican priest Lionel Browning and his wife watched from their dining room a long cigar-shaped object, estimated at about a hundred feet, move north at 60 to 70 mph, stop, and be joined by five or six small saucer-like objects. Local newspapers reported it from 10 October and it began a wave of Tasmanian reports. RAAF Wing Commander Waller interviewed the couple on 11 November and found them stable and sincere; Air Force Intelligence attributed the sighting to a moonrise with scud cloud. Browning stated there was no cloud or scud at the time.
What officials concluded
Resolved
RAAF: moonrise associated with meteorological conditions (scud cloud)
Strongest ordinary reading
Moonrise through low cloud (RAAF), disputed by the witnesses
